Kerry Stephens was admitted to practice as a barrister and solicitor in 1990. Kerry retired from the Victoria Police in December 2005. Shortly after retiring, Kerry commenced work for Tony Hargreaves and Partners as a solicitor. Over the next two and a bit years Kerry primarily defended persons charged with committing criminal offences.

Kerry spent most of the latter part of his service with Victoria Police at the Police Academy as an instructor, as the officer in charge of the Law Review Unit or as a member of the Prosecutions Division. Kerry was the Superintendent in charge of the Prosecutions Division between 1997 and December 2003. Kerry compiled the first two editions of the Victoria Police Drink Driving Manual and Digest. Kerry also compiled the Brief Manager’s Manual and wrote a number of chapters of the Prosecution Division’s Manual.

Kerry has extensive experience in, and a detailed knowledge of criminal law, traffic law, the laws of evidence and he possesses excellent legal research skills. Kerry has lectured in legal studies at the Caulfied campus of Monash University and he designed and implemented a distance education course for Gippsland College. Kerry has also authored a book on the admissibility of evidence entitled ‘Voir Dire Law - Determining the Admissibility of Disputed Evidence’.
